Ok I am doing my first pair of socks and I wanted to do a simple pair of ankle socks. I have the pattern and everything but I tend to do a learn while I do technique because there are lots of things I have not done yet and I like the challenge. What I was wondering is should I try the amazing 2 in 1 method just go balls out and see what happens or should I take the safe road and do them one at a time? I dont know how easy or hard it is to do socks. Any thoughts or ideas would be much loved. Thanks!
Personally, I think that one sock at the time is the best bet for 1st time socknitters
I read that you already have a pattern, but I would still like to suggest Silver’s pattern and sock tutorial, it will take you thru socknittting step by step.
Have Fun :cheering:
I’d also go with one at a time if you’re a sock virgin.
The first one teaches you the architecture of a sock,
which is a strange and wonderful thing.
Once you get your fingers and mind around that
(and I believe you have to do it to get it),
the next one is a cinch.
Doing two at a time is a whole other technique to learn
(and knitting one sock inside the other is a real parlor trick should you ever decide to go there).
I also believe that doing is the best way to learn, but there’s a difference between challenging yourself and making yourself crazy.
Ha ha thanks I will take your advice and do them one at a time. I have been playing arround with the 2 in 1 method its not that bad ( I do alot of prctice then take it apart kind of deals) but I once I get down to the heel and stuff I may try to kill. lol Thanks alot now lets just see how long it takes me to finish them. haha
To learn the architecture of a sock, I took some yarn I didn’t like and just made one sock following the pattern. I called it the “test sock”. It taught me what I needed to know and I didn’t have to worry about matching it to anything.
I also recommend using a baby sock pattern for the first attempt; there are fewer stitches and all the construction is the same. It goes really quick and builds your confidence!
I did the Silvers sock tutorial and my sock turned out great. It took about 2 days working here and there when I could to get to the grafting of the toes. Unfortunately there was sad news I got home from work my puppy had got into my knitting bag and chewed my DPN’s and my new sock but it was just a practice sock and I found out I love socks yay so I guess I will just have to make more then wont I?
