Knitpicks Hanging Gareden Lace Stole

Has anyone knit this in anything other than the Alpaca Cloud it calls for? I’m not really digging this yarn. It feels kind of … rough?

Also, I tried winding a hank into a ball by myself, and now I have alpaca spaghetti.

I’m open to suggestions.
