Knit with two strands...help!

I am doing a hat pattern with earflaps.

I am just about to start the earflaps. The pattern says:

With 2 strands of yarn, cast on 10 stitches.

So my question is, do I need to make 2 separate balls of yarn for this?
I am using one color and one ball of yarn. How do I do this?

You can either roll a ball from your strand and have two. Or you can use each end of the skein you have.

That will actually work taking both strands from the skein.

Cool, hopefully it won’t tangle - I will try it tomorrow.

I always thought it would tangle, too, but I’ve been assured by several people that it works out just fine, so I take their word for it.
