Knit up a certain number of stitches from front edge - an Alan Dart pattern

Hello! I am working on a toy design by Alan Dart (Herbert the Gardener) and I’m at a part where a cap peak is being made. The pattern states to cast on a length of stitches, then decrease for a handful of rows, then cast off (30 sts down to 6 sts).

Then the pattern reads:
“With RS of work facing, K up 30 from front edge.
P 1 row.
Work the decrease rows again.”

What does it mean when the pattern says to “K up 30 from front edge? Am I picking up 30 stitches and somehow knitting into them again?

This pattern has been so much fun so far, but I’m getting a bit nervous for all the sewing and making up at the end—I could have more questions then :relaxed:
Thanks for any help you can provide! You all always have the best advice and guidance—thanks in advance.

Hello
Cute pattern

Knit up is another way of saying pick up and knit. It is drawing a loop up with your working yarn through the fabric already made.
It sounds like you are returning to the first row of your fabric where you ad 30 sts and, in this case, kntting into each of the 30 sts you see there. This will put 30 stitches onto your needle but will also be joined to the fabric you have already made.

Hope this helps. If it still doesn’t make sense just ask again.
