Knit tighter vs smaller needles

Is it better to try to knit tighter or to use a different needle? I was making my fingerless gloves and with the first - I was very disappointed as they seemed to be too large (admit I didn’t swatch) – so I knit the second and I thought I might run out of yarn so I just was very concious of making sure my stitches were not loose - and viola it fits perfect…

thoughts/help?

IMO, I adjust my needle size 'cuz for me it’s harder to maintain a certain tension. I can in one sitting, but if I put my knitting down and work on it another day, I can change.

I totally agree to change needles so you don’t have to be conscious of your knitting tension every stitch. If the needles work correctly with the yarn, you can just let loose and knit.

Thanks for your replies…I guess I was thinking it would still be “loose” on smaller needles but that wouldn’t matter because it would be compensated for… See you all help in the thought process!

I agree with everyone’s responses so far. You should see the scarf I knitted not long ago–my first project. I was bound and determined to knit loosely even though I normally knit pretty tightly. The first several rows of my scarf are noticeably wider than the rest of the scarf, because I put the knitting down after working the first few loose rows, and when I resumed knitting I was back to working at my normal tighter gauge. I learned quickly not to try to adjust my natural tension, cuz it doesn’t work!
