I am doing garter stitch but when I look at the stitch on the needle (according to the description on this website) it looks like purl.

HELP!!! :??

Garter stitch will look like a lot of purl stitches. That’s because a purl is just a knit, but backwards, so every time you flip your work around, the row you just knit looks like purls (bumps, instead of V’s). If what you see is lots of rows of bumps on both sides, then you’re doing garter stitch right.

Are you trying to knit stockinette? That would have all the v’s on one side and the purls on the other. For that you knit one row and purl one row.

A knit stitch looks like a purl stitch when you look at it on the back side (cause it is). So when you do a whole row of knit stitches and turn it around, it’s going to look like a purl.
