Knit counts don't match

I’m working on a set of baby bootees and I don’t see how the knit counts match up. The directions are as follows:

  1. Cast on 36 stitches
  2. K 1 row
  3. 1st row (right side) k1, yo, k16, yo, [k1, yo] twice, k16, yo, k1

The third line, from my counting requires 41 stitches. But I only have 36!

This type of issue occurs two other times in the pattern so I’m hoping with this one figured out I’ll understand how to do the rest.

Also, what does right side mean? The next line in the directions read:

  1. 2nd and all wrong side rows k to end, working k1 tbl into each yo of previous row.

Please help!

The yarn overs are the 5 extra stitches. When you do that row you will have 41 stitches.

The “right side” of the pattern (generally) is when the side that you are knitting on is facing you. In stockinette knitting you will begin to see the “v” definition to the stitches.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

YOs don’t use a stitch so you don’t count them; they just add a stitch between other ones. The pattern is telling you that row 1 is going to be the RS of the fabric, the side that faces out when you where it and where the main sts are made for the pattern. Row 2 and the even rows are the ‘wrong side/WS’ the inside of the item.
