Knit cap decrease question

Hi knitters, I am making the cap on kindagrape.com/projects/knithat.htm I cast on 72 sts. For first decrease “K 11, K2 tog” etc., but I always wind up with 7 sts remaining.

The math works on paper so what am I doing wrong? Yes, I did re-count my cast-ons and I do have 72.

Maybe the pattern is wrong? But as KnitQueen advises, I “trust the pattern”

:?? That’s weird. You said you counted your cast on stitches, but did you count how many stitches you have on your current round? Maybe you somehow gained or lost some stitches along the way there.

You can’t decrease evenly on 72 stitches using that formula because 13 doesn’t go into 72 evenly. You’re best bet is to decrease 2 on a round, and then do your decreases on k8, k2tog; knit a round; k7, k2tog, knit a round, k6, k2tog, etc.

that decrease doesn’t work out evenly. Basically each decrease repeat is 13 stitches and you can’t divide 13 into 72 evenly…you can only do 5 repeats and there are seven left.

since it is just a basic hat i would just do one more round and decrease two randomly somewhere in that round to get down to 70 and then start with the K8, K2tog round and go from there. that should make it work out for you.

okay i obviously spent too much time thinking about that…lol

 Oh duh! You know… 12 does goes in to 72, so I bet it was a typo and was supposed to start with k10, k2tog.

Thanks for the speedy replies !

My apologies to Ingrid - I attributed “Trust the pattern” to KnitQueen instead of you.

I am so anxious to try out the instructions that my poor little doggy is going to have to wait for his walk. Haven’t figured out a way yet to walk the dog and knit at the same time.
