I’m kntting a sleeveless summer shell in garter stitch and would like to avoid the shoulder seam and join front and back with a Kitchener stitch. Does anyone know of a method for this? Actually, what I’d like to try is working up the shoulder until I have 9 stitches, then making 3 3-stitch i-cords and braiding them for the shoulder straps; then joining them to the other side with a kitchener stitch. That part I think I can handle; it’s the darn kitchener that’s got me stumped. Thanks for your help.
I was just doing kitchener in both st st and garter this morn! Do you have access to Montse Stanley’s ‘Knitter’s Handbook’? It shows kitch done on various st patts. I’m sure the info exists online so perhaps someone else can provide a link.

Thanks so much! I found some instructions on knitty.com. It doesn’t seem that much more difficult than kitchener in stockinette. I’m on the way!
Elizabeth Zimmermann in [U]Knitting Without Tears[/U] page 29 talks about kitchener stitch (she calls it weaving) in garter. She describes it as easier than in st st. She cautions that the trick is to have the correct sides of the fabric together. I don’t think that is an issue on a top like you are making, but you probably need to have the right rows in the sequence of the garter facing to get it to come out perfectly. EZ says something about the best way to insure that you have it set up right is to have the working treads hanging from the same end as you start the kitchener. That may be the ticket. I’m not sure.
