Kiri Shawl Pattern Question

Hi, I’m just about to start the kiri shawl and am a little confused about the pattern directions.

I have a pretty basic chart question regarding what to do on the the second sequence of the first chart. The instructions only include half of the chart and say that when you reach the end of the chart (which is the center stitch), to work the sequence of stitches again from right to left.

On the chart, there is an indication to skip the first k3 of the border and begin with the yo portion to the center stitch. Got it. But if I merely continue on, I will end with the center stitch (and have no border of the k3 stitches on the other side). I wouldn’t think I would want another center stitch at the far left of the shawl. Don’t I want the k3 border?

I know I’m missing something basic here, but I can’t quite figure out what it is.

End with a knit 3 to keep the border. In fact, compare the written directions to the chart to make sure that you’re following the cart correctly.

I think you would work the chart backwards for the 2nd half, so starting with the center stitch of the chart (only 1) go from left to right, back toward the beginning of that row and end with the k3 you started with. That way both sides are a mirror image, not just a repeat.

That was my first thought, too, but if you look at the charts, they indicate where to start the repeat.

I’m not familiar with it, have only read discussions about it, so believed it was a mirror image, not a repeat.

<goes to look at the pattern>

Yeah, the chart is obviously marked with the border stitches and center st separate, and the pattern stitches say to begin 2nd half. So on that half of the row, end with border sts to match the beginning.

Thanks everyone!
