Usually when I visit KH each day, I click on “view posts since last visit” which appears on the upper right hand side (not all the way up at the top though).

Make sure you’re logged in to see the ‘view posts since last visit’.
We have traditionally used the General Forum for local issues. Im not sure that there have ever been enough local threads to warrant their own forum, but Ill goose Amy to make sure she reads your suggestion!
Too many forums gets cumbersome and I don’t think we need an OT forum as that is what the general forum is for…a big ol’ coffee klatch! However, I’ve been in forums were they had a “meet and greet” type forum for gatherings so that’s a thought. It doesn’t bother me in the least the way it is now though.
