My current pattern is very, very clear and uses the instruction kfb (knit front and back of stich) for the increases. Is this method the same as the instruction M1?

While they are both increases, they are done differently. Using one instead or the other could mess up your total stitch count at the end of the row, expecially when the pattern specifies a particular one.
M1 is done between 2 stitches. kfb uses a stitch and adds one at the same time.

Sometimes people writing up the patterns they’ve done use make one as an increase, they may have actually done kfb, not M1. As Mirl56 notes, there’s a difference in them and using one instead of another may affect the placement of the increase which can throw off your pattern.
I use that stitch all the time I found that tip on here the other day before I joined up.
I am doing the february lady patter and she used M1 but in parenthese said that kfb could be done as well. I used the kfb since I am more familiar with it but now I am worried, how badly have I messed up my stitch count?
I think kfb looks neater in garter st and blends in better than M1, but it’s more of an indivdual preference sometimes.
