I am trying to make a Pineapple Dishcloth (free pattern on the yarnspirations website (I cannot attach link for some reason - go to the website then backslash pattern, backsplash knitting, backslash pineapple-dishcloth)
I am so confused!!
Instructions are:
1st Row: (RS). Knit (I have 24 stitches when complete)
2nd Row: K1. P1. Wrapping yarn around needle twice per st, purl to last 2 sts. P1. K1. (I have 44 stitches once complete)
3rd Row: K2. *Sl5, dropping extra loops of each st. Return these 5 slipped sts back onto left-hand needle. Wrapping yarn around needle twice per st, work these 5 sts tog as follows and do not remove sts from left-hand needle until complete: (K5tog. P5tog. K5tog. P5tog. K5tog). Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. (once complete, I have 12 stitches)
I think I am doing something wrong … in the 3rd row, I knit 2, then I slip 5 of my “double stitches” off onto the right needle, then place them back on the left needle - I then knit those 5 together and move them onto the right needle - then I do the same thing except purl for the next 5.
Also - when I go to the 7th Row instructions, it says to do as 3rd row, but I don’t have enough stitches on my needles to K5tog and then P5tog.
I have completed 16 rows of the pattern and something just is not right! What am I doing wrong? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated!! I’m trying to make this for my Mom for Mother’s Day!
Thanks!!

Welcome to KH. You can post a link after your first post, just copy paste the URL into the Message box. This video shows the basic concept of what you’re wanting to do. You will leave the 5 sts you’re working into on the left needle until you’ve knit and purled the same stitches a total of 5 times. HTH
I think you will find this link to be helpful. This pattern is great, I’m sure your mother will love it!
Thank you so much to both of you!! I am newer to knitting so I had no idea what this meant! I’ll give it another shot!
I’m glad we could help. We all were new to knitting and didn’t know what things meant and now have a some experience, some much more than me. I hope we get to see your finished dishcloth.

Ok, so I made it through the first part of the dishcloth - now I am working on the green topper of the pineapple - the pattern says to do the following for Row 2…
K12. Place marker on last st. K11.
I knitted 12 - placed a marker on my needle and then knitted 11.
Row 3 says to “Cast on 8 sts. Knit to 1 st before marker. K3tog. Knit to end of row”
I casted on 8 stitches - then I knitted all the way to the marker and knitted 3 together, but I’m thinking that I wasn’t supposed to knit all the way up to the marker? When it says “knit to 1 st before marker” am I supposed to leave 1 stitch before the marker on the left needle? If I do this, and try to K3tog, the marker ends up becoming a part of the stitch and then I loose it. What am I doing wrong???
THANK YOU!!!
Hi Gracie, I answered this in the separate thread you started before I saw this one. Best to post once since duplicate posts become confusing.
Good luck finishing up and do post a photo if you’d like. We’d love to see the finished dishcloth.
Thank you!! I wasn’t sure if posting in an old thread would work or not - I appreciate your time - still learning how to knit and how this forum works!!
