K3tog

Pattern is from “Easy Knit & Crochet Ideas” premiere issue: Mohair Lace Scarf, needle 13, using LionBrand Moonlight Mohair.

Instructions:
CO 19 sts
Row 1 slip lst st as if to k "yo, k1,k3tog, k1, yo k1* to end of row

Row 2 slip lst st as if to P, k5, p1 to end of row

These two rows are repeated to complete the project.

I find it most difficlt to knit the 3ktog and will not be worth doing the project. Is there some secret to knitting 3 sts together?

I picked up my knitting again after 25 years. Doing this got me through a “sick time.”

I find it’s easiest to knit 3 together if I knit the 3 stitches very loosely on the row before I need to k3tog. When I was doing my square for Amy’s afghan, I had to K3tog without slipping sts off the needle, then YO and K3tog again… I learned very quickly to find the places where I would need to K3tog and knit them very loosely. It was pretty hard on my hands for a couple of rows before I figured it out. Maybe it can help you too. In your case, I think it would be the middle 3 sts of your K5 in row 2.

I find it helpful to slip the three stitches to the right needles, then back to the left - that tends to loosen them up a little bit

You can also try slipping the stitches onto a thinner dpn to give you more room to knit them together.

I was working on something on a size 6 needle and really struggled with the k3tog for awhile. Eventually, I got out an extra size 1 needle and used that to k3tog and then transferred the new stitch back on to my size 6 again. So I guess I used three needles to knit instead of two.
