I have a pattern for a hat that casts on 12 on DPNs and then has you *K1 M1 , * repeat around - 18 stitches total. but if you K1 M1 starting with 12 stiches you end up with 24 not 18 -what am I missing?
the rest of the pattern calls for a K2 M1 then a K3 M1 etc. but each st count is only supposed to increase by 6 ( ie 12 the 18 then 24 then 30,etc) should I only do the pattern twice on each DPN then knit to the end of that needle? ( two increases on each needle would always make 6 ) or just do the pattern until I have done M1 6 times then just knit to the end? Help!
K1 M1 pattern with wrong count
That doesn’t sound like a very well written pattern! I think I’d bag it and find another one!!
but if you really must continue with that one, I think I’d do the increases as they have them and ignor the stitch count they give. Try that a few rounds and see if it’s looking the way the photo looks.
Is the pattern/photo somewhere we can see it? Someone might be able to be more help if we can see what it’s supposed to look like and see how the wrote the entire directions.
I started the pattern again and instead of doing an actual Make 1 I did a KFB increase and the count is now just fine. go figure.
And thanks for your advice!
Glad it’s working for you now!

That’s because a KFB uses one stitch as it increases, so you are really increasing every 2, instead of every other stitch. So long as you keep the KFB as your increases, and follow the pattern as you describe above, you will only increase twice each needle each increase round!
Yeah, sometimes people use m1 to mean an increase, not specifically the M1 increase. Kfb is probably the one they meant.
