Just When Ya Start To Lose Faith In Humanity

someone comes along and does something so incredibly nice…

The other day the ice cream man was in our neighborhood. The kids got all excited and I told them I had some change so I’d get them each an ice cream. We went inside and I found $1.25, all in change.

Well, when I was a kid, you could get an ice cream for 25 cents, and, even just last year, the cheapest ice cream was 50 cents. I figured with a buck 25, they could each get an ice cream, no problem.

So, we wave down the truck, he stops, I’m looking at the selection and see there is absolutely nothing for less than a dollar. In the meantime, a guy comes over to the truck, he was about 15 or so, guessing, and I have never seen him in my life. He was standing right next to me so he of course saw I had only change and he overheard me telling the kids I could only get them one ice cream and they’d have to share.

He turns to me and says he’ll buy the kids ice cream. I told him thank you, but he didn’t have to do that, they could just share the one and he said, no, really, it’s no problem. He asked the kids which ice cream they wanted and then he asked the ice cream man to get the 2 ice creams the kids wanted, and he got 3 for himself (and I assume friends or siblings). I insisted he take the dollar 25 I did have to at least cover the cost of one of the ice creams and he said no, it wasn’t a problem.

I told him thank you and the kids did too, he said “you’re welcome” and was on his way.

I was just totally blown away! Hopefully I’ll have more money next time the ice cream man drives by and that guy will be there so I can return the favor!

What a nice guy! Thats always what you hope your kids would do if they had a chance. Its nice to know there are still people who do things just to be nice. I think its a reminder that the whole world is not a bad place.

what a lovley man. that sort of thing just dosent happen often enough.

well thats a great thing for kids to see done by a stranger. shows them that not everyones bad now a days

:yay: Good for him! :yay:

You never know how you can change someone’s day or even their life with a little love.

Living here in a busy Washington, DC suburb, I am floored by how confused people are sometimes when you do something that to me seems so simple…paying a toll for the car behind you or helping someone from out of the country to pay the right amount in US dollars or even just holding a door for them. It’s as if they don’t understand why you would be so kind to them. Well, because you are a human being and worthy of my compassion and respect. And because I hope when you get the chance, you’ll do the same!

Wow! And he was only a teenager??

I have to say that I think we underestimate the human potential for kindness. Especially in teens.

I’m so glad you and your kids got to experience this random act of kindness. Your kids will not forget it, that’s for sure. What a wonderful example that young man set for them and all of us.

How nice of him. I bet that is something your children will remember too.

That was very sweet of him!

One of the saddest things in our society is that it has gotten so busy that we learn about our community from the 6:00 news. And that good people don’t make the 6:00 news! I truly believe that 90% of the population is decent…but that we all watch the news, see the terrible things done by a very small minority, and think that the world’s gone to H3!! in a handbasket.

When I worked in a small truckstop/restaurant beside a very busy highway fresh out of high school, I got there most days in a car knicknamed ‘the possum’. It was small, white, and frequently found dead on the side of the road. I only lived a mile from work, so one day when it died midway, I just walked the rest of the way. Within the first 2 hours of getting there, nearly a dozen people checked to see that I’d made it because they’d seen the car. A couple were truckers who’d had no intention of stopping to eat, but pulled in long enough to check on me before continuing on their way.

That’s why I love the Ice Cream Man. He brings out the best in people. Getting ice cream like that is such a fun summertime experience. What a nice guy. Paying it forward?

That awesome and great to hear

What a great story! I’ve also seen an ice cream truck staffed by women who have been kind to my son when he dropped his ice cream and gave another for free. I think ice cream brings out the good in people. Maybe the world needs more ice cream?

What a great kid!

That’s awesome! Someone is raising him to be a kind and generous man!

What a great story!!! Its nice to hear that it was a teenager that helped out too. That really touches my heart

I love to hear stories like this-what a sweet young man!! I  it !

How sweet! I try to do little things like that any chance I get. There’s really nothing better than the feeling of knowing you made someone’s day better.

Thank you so much for sharing this story! I absolutely love it. I’m sure seeing the smile on your kids’ faces made it all worth it for him.

I think that is great. :cheering: So often teenager’s kindness is underestimated. I teach second grade and in our school district we have a high school mentoring program that has high school students come to elementary school and mentor younger kids. I see so many awesome teenagers who I like to think would have done the same thing as this young man. It is a shame that in the news the saying “if it bleeds it leads” is the norm. I’d much rather see all the positive things that are going on everyday all across the world.

Ok, aside from the weird pool guy (another post) and a weird guy across the street, I just love my neighborhood…lol…Today the kids wanted ice cream again and my daughter had a dollar from the tooth fairy and wanted to spend it on ice cream. That was seriously the only cash in the house. Well, the ice cream man stops and my daughter buys an ice cream that her and my son can share. Some of her friends were there too and they all bought ice cream as well. Well, the ice cream man saw that I was the only one with no ice cream and just gave me one! He said it wasn’t fair all the kids had ice cream and I didn’t have anything on such a hot day so he handed me a dreamsicle!

Then, a police man pulled up behind the ice cream truck and he saw my son and I standing there and I asked my son if he wanted to wave to the policeman. So, he did, and I waved as well and the officer waved back the turned on his lights so my son could see the lights flashing.

I swear, it seems like I’m back in the 50’s or something where everyone is so willing to help each other out and so nice and friendly and it’s AWESOME!! I don’t think I ever want to move from here…lol
