Joining stitches on circular needles

Help - I am desparate to learn to make hats for my 6 month old, but can’t figure out how to join stitches on circular needles. Can you help?

Ah! Once again, I am saved by this forum! I am trying to learn circular needles, but was confused by “joining” and whether that meant some secret understood-by-everyone stitch or just meant to put the needles together and start. Whew. There’s so much I don’t know!
