Joining in the round and Ear Flap pattern question

Hello! I really love this forum, since it helps me find answers to so many of my knitting questions. I haven’t been able to find answers to these questions though, so I apologize if they’ve already been answered several times

I am currently knitting this Ear Flap hat from Lion Brand. I’m working with circular needles (size 11) rather than dpns and am using the suggested yarn, the Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. I’m wondering about my join. It looks really uneven and I can’t tell whether it’s just because this yarn is really thick, or if I’ve done something wrong. Is it normal for my join to look uneven? I always seem to forget how to do the join between hat projects, so I watched the video here and I did my join like that, but it still looks funny. What do you guys think?

Also a question regarding the pattern. When it says

“Change to Stockinette St and work 1 (1, 2) rows even. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced around – 40 (44, 48) sts.”

does that mean that I knit those two knit rows with the full number of stitches and then decrease? I’m confused that they say “knit x rows even.”

Thanks!

it’s normal tohave the hat uneven when you join, the only way to avoid this, that I know of is to do it on straight needles and then sew a seam. and your question about the pattern, yes you do work those 2 rows with the stitches you have and then decrease.
please post a pic when your done under the ‘whatcha knitting?’ forum.

I find that once you weave in the loose ends, that the join doesn’t look uneven at all. It all seems to be fine and I usually can’t even find my start point!

Thank you! I’ll keep knitting it tonight and I’m glad that it will even out, that makes me feel better  If I can get a good picture I’ll post it when I’m done.
