Joining band to Verity Pattern Beret

Hi,
I’m making a nice pattern I purchased online for a beret (Verity). I’ve completed the hat portion. Live stitches are still on the round needles waiting for the band portion.

Next, the pattern states to cut the yarn and put the hat part aside. Then, use 2 dpns to create the beginning of the band (separate from the hat for now). The band will have a little flap that goes over itself with a button (for show only). I’ve finished the start of the band (the flap part), 12 stitches, 15 rows, on dpns. But now I’m confused about how to join to the live stitches of hat portion to create the actual band. I understand how to do the stitches in the pattern, just not how to join per pattern.

The directions state: The rest of the band will now be worked onto the hat. With the wrong side of hat facing you, join the band to the first stitch on the left needle tip.

Q: How do I accomplish this join?

The pattern then states:

NEXT ROW (WS): k1, sl1… repeat to 2 sts from end, k1, ssk working 1 stitch from band together with 1 stitch of hat. Turn.

Q: What am I turning?

NEXT ROW (RS): P1, sl1… repeat to 2 sts from end, p2.

Rep these 2 rows until all of the hat sts have been worked. Bind off.

Can anyone explain, in simple beginners terms how to join and give me an idea of how to work this portion? I’m unsure if I’m working with 1 dpn and my round needles, or if I’m supposed to be working these stitches with 2 dpns, as I’ve been using to create the start of the band.

Thanks again for your help,
Lee Lee

Hi, I went and looked at some pictures of this hat on Ravelry so I’d understand more. What you are going to do is to continue making more band just like you were on the dpns, and you turned it at the end of each row, that is what the turn means. It just means turn to work the next row of the band. I read that quite a few people had trouble with the band directions so they are probably a little unclear.

What I don’t get is how you,

join the band to the first stitch on the left needle tip.
And then for the NEXT ROW it says to join the last stitch of that row to the hat. You can’t join both ends of the band to the hat.

I’m wondering if the way it works is that the join row is actually what they call that first “next row”. That would make sense because it says that first row is the WS and you are supposed to begin joining with the WS facing, so it seems like you would want to begin on a WS row. Try this and see if it makes sense, and/or works. Hold the hat with the stitches on the circular needle so that the hat is wrong side out. Then knit across the next row of your band as it gives it for the first 'next row".

NEXT ROW (WS): k1, sl1… repeat to 2 sts from end, k1, ssk working 1 stitch from band together with 1 stitch of hat. Turn.
So when you are 2 stitches from the end of the band (you continue to work the band on the 2 dpns), then knit one more stitch on the band. Now you are going to do a regular SSK but the first stitch you slip will be the last of the band stitches and the other stitch you slip will be the first stitch from the stitches on the circular. You will want to be holding the circular up right next to where you were knitting (maybe before you finish the band bring the circular up so that it is parallel with the needle you are working the band off of), and I believe you will be working off the the left needle tip of the two ends of the circular. Stop and think as you are in this position, if you kept making a band out right there is it going to be in the right place and both pieces have the correct sides out.

After you have slipped the last stitch of the band and the first stitch of the hat, knit them together as a regular SSK. Then you turn the little band part you are making and work the other row:

NEXT ROW (RS): P1, sl1… repeat to 2 sts from end, p2.
That will be a right side row of the band and will end up being a right side row of the band attached to the right side of the hat as you keep joining at the end of each WS row. After you finish that row turn your little band on the dpns and work back across doing a SSK that is shared between the last stitch of the band and the next stitch of the hat. Turn and work the right side row. Just keep doing that over and over until you have used all the stitches of the hat. Then bind off. I hope that helps. If what I said isn’t quite right in all respects it will help you figure out what you need to do.
