Joining a new yarn colour

Hi Knitters,

I am still a newbie to knitting (6wks in and counting) and have successfully completed some small projects but currently am making an adult beanie that is striped different colours and wondering if anyone can give me some tips on how to neatly join a new ball of yarn.

What I am doing at the moment is tying the new colour on with a slip knot and sliding it up the yarn that I am finishing with. I then knit a row and then tie the knot on the other side (hope this is making sense…).

I find though that the edges get a little messy and not sure if there is something I should be doing instead.

Any tips would be great & would be much appreciated.

I’ve only been knitting since Feb. and that’s how I still do it. The ladies here recommend just starting to knit with the new yarn w/o knotting it, but I haven’t quite gotten the hang of that yet. :slight_smile:
