Join on DPNs and set-up round quesiton

Hello,

I’m starting my first pair of mittens, doing the Simple collection’s Maize mitts, but I’m having a bit of confusion getting started.

The pattern has you get started like this:

CO 24 (28, 32, 36, 40) sts, PM (this is the BOR), and
join for working in the round, taking care not to
twist the cast-on.

Setup ribbing: p1, k3, (p1, k1) to end
Work 11 (11, 13, 15, 17) more rounds in ribbing as set.

I normally would join by knitting into the first stitch, but in this case, would I purl into the first stitch instead? Or does the knit-as-join not count, and I should start with the purl right after the join and continue from there?

(does that even make sense? If It doesn’t, just tell me I’m nonsensical, and I’ll try again…)

Good question. I think I would go ahead and join as usual and then p1, k3… because it says to join before it says to purl.

It makes sense to me so if you’re nonsensical we both are. Cute pattern.
