Join new ball of yarn?

I have always done top-down sweaters, this is my first regular…anyway the pattern says:

Shape neck, next row (RS): work 16 sts, join second ball of yarn, work next 10 sts and place on holder; work rem sts. Working both sides with separate balls of yarn.

My question is after I work the first 16 sts where do I join the yarn and do I work the next 10 sts and remaining sts with the new ball of yarn?

thanks in advance for any help.

To ‘join’ a ball of yarn you just start knitting with it, leaving a tail. So work 16sts, drop that yarn, pick up a new end and do the next 10 with it, put those sts on a holder and finish the row, which is probably also the next 16. Then you turn and work back across the shoulder, drop that yarn when you get to the sts on the holder, pick up the old yarn and do that shoulder’s sts with it.
