Joel & Liliyarn Show - Actual FO's

Knit-Geek Questionnaire

  1. What’s your worst habit relating to your knitting?

A “To-Do” list a mile long with yarn to match.

  1. In what specific ways does your knitting make you a better person?

All the people I’ve met through the craft. A bit of self confidence knowing that I can do something well.

  1. How might you or your life be different if you were suddenly unable to knit?

Let’s not thing about that. It’s hitting a bit too close to home as I am suddenly suffering from carpal tunnel. Very badly I might say. Tonight my hand was cramping up while I was spinning.

  1. If money were no object, what one yarn, and what one tool or gadget would you run out and buy first?

The hand carved, $5,000 spinning wheels…a woolie winder, A swift. For yarn Noro, probably their transitions or silk garden. Maybe Karaoke Soy Silk/ Wool blend. Mmmmmm. Baby camel fiber for spinning.

  1. What knitting technique or project type are you most afraid of (if any)? What, specifically, do you fear will happen when you try it?

None. I can do them all, just some better than others.

  1. Who is/are your knitting hero(es), and why?

Anyone that can take an unused item in the knitting world and make it marvelous.

  1. Do you consider knitting, for you personally, a mostly social activity, or a mostly solitary activity?

I knit constantly. So both.

  1. Is there a particular regional tradition in knitting that you feel strongly drawn toward (e.g., Fair Isle, Scandinavian, Celtic, Orenburg lace)? Any theories as to why it calls to you?

Nope, all knits are equal.

  1. If you were a yarn, which yarn would you be?

I’d love to say Noro silk garden. Saying that I’m an aquired taste, kindda soft, and really cool even if you don’t care for me. However, I’m probably super wash wool of the generic kind. Grey color, worsted weight.

  1. Some statistics:
    (a) How many years have passed since you FIRST learned to knit?
    I dunno…maybe 5 years.
    (b) How many total years have you been actively, regularly knitting (i.e., they don’t have to have been in a row)?
Once I knitted my first stitch, I haven’t stopped. So, maybe 5 years.
© how many people have you taught to knit?
I haven’t kept count. Recently about 5, but I doubt they are very passionate about it.
    (d) Roughly what percentage of your FOs do you give away (to anyone besides yourself, i.e., including your immediate family)
    98%

  2. How often do you KIP (knit in public)? i.e., once a week, once a month, etc. Where do you do it?

Any time spent waiting. Such as in a restaurant, in lines, etc. And once a week at my meet up in Panera Bread or B&N. Sometimes, I make a visit at my LYS and KIP there.

  1. If a genie granted you one hour to stitch-n-bitch with any one knitter, living or dead, who would you choose and why?

It wouldn’t matter much. Pick anyone who knits. I’d love to sit with them. And actually, I’d prefer male as I have yet to meet a male knitter in person.

  1. What aspect or task in knitting makes you most impatient?

L-A-C-E

  1. What is it about knitting that never lets you get bored with it?

Name it, and I’m sure it would be a reason. I love the historical side. It’s an art that I don’t want to die just because we really don’t need it anymore.

  1. Describe how and where you most often do your knitting - where do you sit, what is going on around you, what tools do you use and how are they (dis)organized?

Where- anywhere, except when I drive my car In my home it is in our entertainment room upstairs. However, I have a space carved out down stairs that will be my knitting and spinning room. I sit on the couch in front of the TV.

Goings on- My cat is running off with any natural fiber spun or un-spun. Smacking my needles and yarn. I’m constantly saying” Stop eating my yarn!”

Oranization - I believe in “free” range yarn. It moves freely from room to room. Socks are everywhere, big projects are upstairs, fiber is placed nearby in hopes of making new yarn.

  1. Which one person is the recipient of more of your knitting than any other?

My mother as she vocalizes requests. She’s the only one who gives me knitting “orders”

  1. What’s the oddest thing about your knitting, or yourself as a knitter?

Spinning gets looks. But nothing strange about me on the surface. I follow people around trying to get close looks at any knits they may be wearing. I also pause movies for the same reason. Guys who knit are beyond sexy in my eyes. I want to own camels just for their fiber, and throw in some different kinds of sheep. I see my cat as a free fiber source.

  1. What do you see yourself knitting - if anything - twenty years from now?

Anything but baby items. I’m sick of knitting pastel acrylic.

  1. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could have only ONE SKEIN of yarn, which yarn would it be and what would you do with it?

I dunno. Maybe a huge cone of cotton. Just think of the possibilities. Or maybe hemp. Plant fibers as they wouldn’t be hot.

  1. If you were allowed to own only one knitting-related book, which would it be? (you’d be free to browse others, but you couldn’t keep them)

Sensational Knitted Socks or The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook. It’s a tie between them. But if I could bend the rules and have all the spinning books I wanted then I’d say Sensational Socks because the other book is aimed at spinners and I could get away with it.

  1. Is knitting the new yoga? Why or why not?

I’m not really sure what is meant by “new” yoga. Seeing how most people are hardly at peace when learning to knit, I’d doubt it. I know when the words mohair and lace are said together I immediately tense.

Hi Lily!!! :waving:

So, I finally got around to posting pics on my blog. I won’t post them all here, just the ugliest rug as I call it. Still love it though. Made of my first homespuns.

So, I go to my beloved LYS. I try to visit about once a month to buy yarn and support her business. They love to see me coming. This trip I buy everything for a Noni bag, a swift, everything for the Lexi purse, everything for the Sabine scarf, Bearfoot’s new fall colored sock yarn, Opal sock yarn, Lorna’s Laces in Child’s Play and Charcoal, Fotissma disco sock yarn. I’m done for a while…no more trips to the LYS.

Hi Lilly!

I noticed that you are a Carolina girl, too. I’m in North Carolina, near Charlotte. Very nice to meet you! :waving:

Welcome to blogland, Lily! :waving:

I love the questionnaire you use to introduce your blog–it’s a fun twist on the “100 things about me” most everyone else uses!

Hey Carolina!! I’m in Greenville, SC, but I used to live just south of you in Monroe NC. Wished I had been on this site before now. Maybe we could have hooked up and knitted.

That would have been way cool!

I’m actually in Indian Trail. I’m sure you’ve seen that city before, on your way to Charlotte. I was born here, and haven’t left yet!

Small world…

Indian Trail was minutes from Monroe. I ocassionally get to the Charlotte area. Oh hey, are you going to SAFF this October??If so, I’m sure our paths will cross. My favorite LYS will have a booth there. Yarns Forever.

Whatchoo talkin’ bout? You KNOW I’ll be there! I’ve only talked about it 30 times a day in this forum for the past 3 months! :teehee:

I wish we could plan a get-together for some of our members there, but I just don’t know my way around those mountains very well. (I always end up lost because I’m too busy looking at the gorgeous scenery to pay attention to the road names!)

I originally wanted to take the “Beginning Spinner’s” class, because I have an Ashford Traditional wheel I’m trying to learn to use. But, some of the classes have already filled up, and I still haven’t sent in a registration for it! Oh well. Even if I don’t get to go to the spinning class, I’ll still love going to all the yarn and fiber displays, the angora rabbit cages, the alpaca, the sheep, the llama, the spinning wheels, the drop spindles, the felting exhibits, the knitting stuff. I don’t think I’ll be bored!

Visit SAFF!

:teehee: I thought you’d be going! I wanna take all the workshops. Even though I took a spin class, I was considering taking another one. Can’t hurt as I need all the help I can get. Love the dye workshops. Love to take a more advanced spin class, but I don’t think I’m ready. Maybe next year. Or I’ll eventually get to Earthguild for a class.

When we know what days we’ll be going, e-mail me. liliyarnatyahoodotcom. I’ll try to at least meet and say hi to a fellow spinner/knitter.

I have a weakness for animals. When I see them I want to take them home. I also have this weakness with spinning wheels, and now that I think of it…it’s the same with yarn and fiber. I need someone to help restrain me.

Tell me all about Earthguild.

Well, if you’re thinking I’ll restrain you, you’re all WRONG! I’d be all, “Go on…buy it!” :teehee:

Earthguild is the only other fiber shop I know of “in my area” besides my LYS. They offer spin classes.

http://www.earthguild.com/

Probably will have a booth at SAFF. I’ve never been to their shop in person. I thought of hopping over while visiting SAFF.

Enjoy!

Okay…now I know where I’ll be going when I’m in the Asheville area!

Nifty! Glad I could share.

I am bored. I hate being bored. I’m at the point where I just woke up and didn’t get enough sleep. So, I hate to knit and mess up. So, I read mail from my spin and knit lists.

All is quiet on the list front.

Another busy weekend planned

How is it that so much gets stuffed into a weekend? It’s like I run myself out during the week with work, then try to live it up on the weekend.

Saturday
I’m spinning at the historical mill all day
I drive an hour one way to get there.

Sunday
Time with Mom

Monday
Knit Guild meeting - it’s the stash busting yard sale!! Woohooooooo.
Spend time with spinner friend
Rush to knit meet up to teach the second part of the class.

At least it doesn’t seem as busy as the other weekend.

But I’m chilling for the rest of the month. Way too much on my plate right now.

Wow, that’s a lot to do timewise, but it sounds wonderful!

AW!!! I WANT TO SPIN AT THE HISTORICAL MILL!!! :waah:

AND I WANT TO TEACH A KNITTING CLASS!!! :frog:

You’re so lucky, Lily! :pout:
