Hi to all. I thought I understood the free pattern of the Jakobe Shawl published on Ravelry. This triangular shawl has alternating sections of garter stitches and lace pattern. At the end of the first garter section, there is a total of 41 stitches. I have tried to knit the first row of the lace section a few times. If I follow the instructions as I understand them, I am unable to complete the first row of the lace section as the number of garter stitches on my needle is insufficient. How must I read the lace chart? Why am I unable to complete the first row of the lace section? I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.
Jakobe Shawl (Anette Mielche) Lace Section
Very nice looking shawl with a pretty lace motif.
Work the chart sts starting on the right lower edge (3 sts used), work the section in red once (17sts used), then finish with the section in black on the left side of the chart (21sts used). That’s 41 sts needed to work the row.
When you work the yarn over, are you bringing the yarn to the front between the needles then over the right needle to the back. That’s it. It won’t use a stitch.
How many sts are you lacking to finish the row?
Salmonmac: Thank you for your help. When you write: Work the chart sts starting on the right lower edge (3 sts used), the two first sts are garter sts, the third sts becomes 3 sts as there is a 2sts increase (kfbf) in this stitch. I will come backt o you after another try - will be careful to check the way I do my yarnovers. Thank you again.
Well, started again taking into account your explanations and I finished my first lace row with 41 sts. (!!!) Relieved! Will probably post another question if I get stuck later on! Thank you for your help, Salmonmac!
Yes, that’s correct: the first two are the garter border and the third stitch becomes 3sts after the row is worked. Before you work the row, it only counts as one stitch.
If you can figure out a good place to put markers (maybe before and after the red box) that may make it easier to keep on track, especially as the repeats increase.
There are some corrections noted in the Ravelry projects which may have been made in the chart you have.

Giulietta1,
Isn’t this forum the best? I would have been stuck SO MANY TIMES without these folks, especially Salmonmac!
Claudia: yes, this site is a unique and precious tool to help each and every knitters. The moderators are exceptionally dedicated.
Salmonmac: A follow-up. I am knitting the lace section very slowly and scotched to my computer facing an enlarged version of the chart (lace). Still in the middle of the first lace section. Thank you so much for your clever remarks! Will post a note when I have completed the shawl or before if I am puzzled and stucked. Best regards.

Love to see your photo!
A little later, I will try to post a photo
of the shawl in the making.
I added a Google link to a photo of the shawl in a previous post, Salmonmac. It’s the best I could do!
September 2, 2022 - Follow-up. I have knitted 3 lace sections alternating with the knitted sections. I am using a skein of fingering yarn that has no identification. Bought it at reduced price. I will not be able to knit the entire shawl with this unique skein. So plan to knit the border after the fourth knitted rows section. I am encountering probems with pics uploading. Thank you again for your assistance.
This is where I learned to knit after I could make knits and purls.
