I've moved on to a moebius ... thing

If I receive any indication if interest, I shall post some pic.s at various stages.
Let it be known that I have started this … thing more than once. More than twice! In fact, I’ve commenced the bloody thing about six times, I reckon! - but at least now I know what I’m doing. I think. :figureditout:
Of course, it’s a cowl: I suspect just about every moebius object knitted is a cowl of a sort - even if it’s called a scarf.
I’ve ordered a ball of vari-coloured wool from my Aussie supplier - the ones who sell 100gm balls. With it I shall, when I’ve finished this trial version, make one someone might actually wear. I hope.

I would love to see its progress. I haven’t made one yet, but it seems once your past the cast on they are pretty simple from what I’ve read and seen.

I’d love to see a WIP picture, too.

I hope you’re recovering well after your surgery . . . and able to get plenty of rest!

I haven’t intentionally knit a moebius, yet. I’d love to see pictures in progress at any stage whatsoever.

I haven’t intentionally knit a moebius, yet.

:roflhard: Neither have I!!! YET.

I saw the pattern picture on your blog, I look forward to seeing yours. I really want to know, is it as hard to twist the sts on purpose as it can be to not twist them?

Be Warned! - I used only scrap wool. I’m waiting (as usual) on a delivery from Bendigo Woollen Mills, and decided to give it a burl … And it did work.
Found out various important things, first amongst which is what is probably something that a person with a logical mind would’ve taken for granted: WHEN YOU’RE KNITTING A MOEBIUS, YOU CAN ONLY KNIT SO MUCH. Because it fills up the circular needle after a while, if you get my drift …
I’m looking forward to making one without changing colours, because sewing in the ends is all well and good, and I do it Very Carefully; but the fact is that with all the doubling over of the cowl/scarf to keep the neck warm, them ends is highly likely to start unravelling 'emselves. Keep you posted on that.
:waving:

Ain’t that purty! It couldn’t have been made of leftovers, you must have planned to have those bits of yarn to use just so.

You need longer cables for your needles.

Erhmm … talk about zen questions! <grin>
You don’t twist anything, GG! - by far the hardest part is mastering the CO. You gotta watch the pattern-maker’s video; and even that ain’t poifick - which is why I started over so many times.
In making a moebius, there are certain basic points the knitter should have in mind (I didn’t): things like the HOW of the knitting (see attachment) - meaning, what your knitting method will look like.
And don’t take that photo as a real indication, btw! - that example is actually twisted twice rather than once: I only added it to show you more or less what knitting a moebius will look like.

because I have only just realised that I appear to’ve managed to get a double twist into my cowl, ANYWAY.
Boy, is this going to cost me hours of anxious study, or what?!
:wall:

Double twist and all, that’s pretty cool looking! Me thinks you did that on purpose to wow us all!

And it worked!

Nah … I think maybe it’s OK, after all. My problem in viewing it properly is that the faintly fancy stitch (and I emphasise the adverb) makes it hard to look on it like, say, the example I attach …
The basic look of a moebius - or, more correctly, möbius - is as per the other thinggy I’ve attached: and now that I regard that more closely, I think perhaps my scarf IS wrong.
I may have to slash my wrists if I can’t make up my mind.

I say wrap the durn thing around your neck and don’t worry about whether it’s “right” or “wrong” (whatever that means). It’s loverly and once you’ve got it on, no one will be the wiser as to whether it’s got two twists or one!

But that’s just me. If you really REALLY must drive yourself crazy, well, have at it, I guess!

Yer right! - there’s no ‘right’!
And also right about how it looks when wrapped around the neck: not a soul in the world could tell if there were sixteen twists. (I could, of course: I would be choking. Much as several people wish would happen, quite frequently.:teehee:)
I shall proceed with another and superior pattern, provided the bloody site stops telling me that my attempt to buy it with PayPal don’t work …

I finally looked at how to cast on for a moebius. I’m looking at free patterns on Ravelry. I may check www.knittingatplay.com too. I think I’ll try a headband first. This could be a flavor of knitting that I will have to indulge in often. Seeing it twist automagically is just fascinating.

GG, there are several different methods for CO with a moebius: you should look at them all before deciding. Or, of course, you could simply try whichever one you find first and see if it’s OK or if it drives you bonkers.
The one I ended up with, having tried at least three others, was the one for the completed scarf I posted the pic. of; and also, to my great luck, for the next pattern I’m going to do - which is the link I posted when referring to a superior pattern. Total coincidence: one creator is an Aussie and one a yank, and they know nothing of each other. As well, these are the only two moebius patterns I’ve found, in about a thousand years of trawling the Web, that use this particular CO.
Me lucky day!

I found 4 cast ons for doing a Moebius. Is the one you used top secret and available only to those who purchase the pattern? Can’t you use whichever cast on you prefer?

In other words, there ain’t no “can’t” about it, me old china. Up to you.
But yes, you’re right: both the pattern I’ve done and the one I’m now working on are paid for, and thus their common CO methodology is … ahh … classified.
<grin>

:roflhard:
Classified cast ons.
Best joke I’ve heard in a long time.
Thanks, I needed that.
:roflhard:

I love the moebius made out of scrap yarn. It’s a gorgeous combination of colors. Good eye (groan). Looking forward to the next one too.

Marg1e -nice to see another Aussie here, and a Sydneysider too, bonus! Love the mœbius idea, though it does my head in a bit.
