I've lost my ribbing and can't get it back!

I started a scarf and was doing ribbing with K2P2 and it looked great. Well after it was about 10 or 11 inches long something went wrong. I think after reading some other posts I was adding stitches. I couldn’t figure out how to fix it and I couldn’t fix it by going back a few rows so I unraveled the whole thing! I started again and in a few rows I messed up again, so i unraveled, then got stuck again. I am now on my 5th or 6th attempt at this scarf and now I am like 8 rows in and can not see the ribbing. This happened on my attempt before this one too. The first and second time the ribbing was very obviously there so I don’t know why it is not showing up now! Does anyone know what I am now doing wrong and how to correct it. The ribbing looked so good the first time I would love to get it back! Thanks

Are you knitting the knits and purling the purls? That’s the way to do ribbing. If you are purling the knits and knitting the purls, it won’t be a rib. http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips In the link, if you scroll down you can find a video showing how to do ribbing, English or Continental, and maybe by watching it you’ll see what the problem is. Good luck and HTH. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, if you started fine the first time then I’m assuming you know how to do ribbing. Answer these questions and we’ll go from there. If you can post a photo that would help. I have a link in my sig for posting photos, sizes, etc. (you need two posts to post photos btw)

Are your stitches increasing?

Did you set it down in the middle of a row and maybe start going back in the wrong direction?

Did you maybe start knit the purls and purling the knits instead?

I have done this before as I forgot to flip the yarn to the front and to flip it back when I was to knit. Its hard to concentrate and remember to take the yarn to the back for knit and to the front to purl. I have caught myself doing this many times and have ripped it out and started over when I find the spot where I did it. Also depending on the yarn it can get where you cant see it also.

Maybe you forgot to move the yarn between the needles to move it, or somehow added ones at the beginning of the row. And it may also take more than 5 or 6 rows to see the sts start to look like a rib, so next time keep going a few more rows.

Yeah I am pretty sure I am knitting the knits and ptp’s. I thought maybe that I had put it down at one point and picked it up backwards but I have since then started again and still same problem. The first time I saw the ribbing right away and the point I am at now it should be showing already because it was shorter than it is now the first time when I did it and saw the ribbing. I will go a few more rows just in case and see what happens. I have been counting the stitches to make sure they are not increasing and so far so good. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I will press on and let go of my theory that this yarn is cursed :stuck_out_tongue: lol…

If it still seems off to you, then if you can post a picture we can diagnose it better. That’s ‘knit the knits and purl the purls’ as they look on this row, not what you do to them on the previous row, btw, in case you got turned around there.
