Hi everyone, I have been knitting the Cabled Cardigan (pattern #10) from Vogue Knitting’s 2005 fall issue. It’s been going very well so far, but I have reached a point in the pattern where I am supposed to decrease all the way down to 12 stitches. Well, I have 18 left after all the decreases, and naturally I thought I must have missed something, but after looking at the pattern if 20 minutes, and adding up all the decreases, the resulting number is always 18, not 12. I have 54 stitches on my needle, and I work the cables as the pattern says with no problem. Then when I get to the decreases, the pattern reads:
“Work pat to last 14 sts, p2tog, work 12-st band. Rep dec row every 6th row 8 times more, AT SAME TIME, shape armhole when same length as back. After all shaping is completed there are 39 sts. When armhole measures same as back, shape shoulder by binding off 9 sts from shoulder edge 3 times - 12 sts remain.”
So if I have 54 sts, and I work the decrease row 8 times more, then I should have decreased a total of 9 sts. 54-9=45. The arm hole shaping asks to bind off 9 sts 3 times. 9x3=27 SO after you bind off those 27 sts, it brings the 45 I had down to 18. 45-27=18
So am I reading this wrong? I don’t understand how I should have 12 sts left. Can someone help me? If the pattern is flawed, what should I do to fix it? Does anyone know a website or blog where people have completed this pattern, and posted pictures? Thank you SO VERY much!!
Matt
