Please help, I’m attempting to knit some little baby booties and in the material it states you need DPNs, however the instructions make no mention of knitting in the round?
I was also confused by the ‘turn work and knit’ instructions, what does this mean?
Cast on 32 sts for the cuff and work 28 rows in garter st.
Purl 1 row. On the next row, k1, kfb (= knit the next st through the front and back loops), k18. Turn work, k8. Repeat – 16 times in total.
Turn work. Using the right-hand needle, pick up and knit 8 sts along the edge. Turn work, k8 and continue knitting until 2 sts remain. Kfb, k1.
Turn work, k21, k2tog, k4, k2tog.
Turn work. Using the right-hand needle, pick up and knit 8 sts along the edge. Turn work, k8, knit to the end of row.
Work 10 more rows in garter st.
These bootees are knit flat. I’m not sure why the pattern calls for dpns but you can use straight needles or circular to knit back and forth.
The “turn work” is to knit down the instep or top of the foot. After the cuff you knit the
8 instep sts for 16 rows then pick up sts along the end of rows.
We can’t post large portions of patterns on the forum due to designer copyright. Would you use the pencil icon at the bottom of your post to edit out all but the turn instructions please?
Hiya, as @salmonmac says, these are knit flat, so dpns not strictly necessary (although it may be helpful to have more than two needles when you’re going around the corners).
I’m not a sock or bootee knitter, but given this is an easy pattern, the instructions are brief and presume some experience.
There are also translation issue is that in some instances, ’ turn’ means to turn from right to wrong side, and in others, ‘turn’ means to rotate the work.
So you start with 32 stitches and have a rectangle of garter stitch, ending after a wrong side (WS) row. You then work a purl row (RS).
You now have WS facing and work an increase and 18 stitches. You then turn from WS to RS over 8 stitches 16 times which gives you a narrower rectangle exactly centred on your larger rectangle, ending after a WS row.
You now rotate the work to pick up and knit stitches from the right side of the smaller rectangle (looking at the work from the RS) - this should take you back to the stitches remaining on your needle from the larger rectangle. Then rotate again to knit these stitches , adding
the increase at the end to match the increase you worked earlier on the other side.
You then turn the work to the right side - the next row takes you to the front of the bootee, with the decreases centred on the end.
You then rotate the work, pick up stitches from the left side of the smaller rectangle, rotate again to knit the stitches on hold from the larger rectangle. At this point , you should have 48 stitches on your row, and no stitches left on hold. Then follow instructions to the end!
