Is this intarsia?

I want to make a simple hat. I want it to be white with maroon letters that say OU. I only want the OU on the front of the hat. I found the lettering that I want and I went to knitpro to make it into a chart. Then I realized that I might not be able to make this hat in the round. Does anyone know of a way to knit this in the round or can you at least forward me to a tutorial or something? LOL

Also, I was wondering iabout this… I was planning on casting on about 72 stitches for the hat and knitting it with size 9 or 10 needles. The chart that I made from knit pro calls for the pattern to run over 58 stitches. That seems to me to be pretty big. What do you all think? TIA for any advice!

Yes, that is intarsia and it is usually knit flat. If you were to strand the maroon and white there’s a good chance the maroon would show through where you catch the floats. Here’s some videos and info.

And yes, 58 stitches out of 72 would make very large letters.

Yes, 58 stitches sounds like a pretty wide OU on a hat that is 72 stitches. It would probably go around the hat a bit and not just be in front. You could scale it down a bit if you can figure out how to do that. You could use smaller yarn and needles so that you need more stitches and the 58 wouldn’t be such a big % of them, but that makes it more work. I think you will want to do it flat and use intarsia as Jan said.

Smaller needles!!! Merigold, you are a GENIUS! I didn’t even think about that. I was thinking that flat would be better. While I don’t relish the idea of a seam in the hat, I suppose that it’s better than driving myself battier by trying to do something that cant be done.
