Is This Good Sock Yarn?

I’m wanting some beautiful sock yarn to knit for my mom for Christmas.

I found this on eBay. It’s:
2 skeins of Shepherd Sock #70SIZE=5
80% Superwash Wool, 20% Nylon
70 grams / 2.5 oz / 196 meters / 215 yards each skein
Needle 2 US (2.5-3 mm)
7 sts = 1’’ (28 sts = 10 cm)

It costs about $18 each hank but how many socks will each make??? And is this really great sock yarn? I’ve started knitting a sock with Knit Pics Essentials and it’s SOOOOOOOOO thin. I don’t think I like it for socks. I’d like something I can use a size 4 needle…if you have any recommendations, let me know  I’m still SOOOOOOOOOO new to yarn knowledge. I guess I’m a yarntard.

It is about the same thickness as KP Essential and one hank makes one sock. 18 bucks for one hank is not a good price!

Seems pretty expensive to me, but I’m just a dumb ol truck driver.

If you want to knit socks with a size 4 needle I’d recommend a good sport weight yarn. I’ve been working on some socks using a sport weight cotton and it’s knitting up pretty well.

Thanks! I was wrong, the price was actually for 2 hanks.

$18 for enough yarn for a pair of adult socks is not unusual for the upper end sock yarns. I haven’t bought that yarn so I don’t know if that price differs from what it would usually sell retail, but I know that I have payed $18 for yarn for a pair of socks on more than one occasion!

Its about run of the mill for a good sock yarn. Considering the extra bother with ebay I don’t think its worth it. Check out the Loopy Ewe and others like it for some nice sock yarn for that price. Also check out Wendy Knits. She just did “The Summer of Socks” and had comments about a lot of the yarn she used. You can also bury Socks that Rock for that price which are fingering wt. tending toward sport with great colorways.

I just saw that the recommended needle size is 0,1, or 2. So if you don’t like working with KP essentials this might be too thin for you. It sounds like you don’t like fingering weight yarn so look for sock yarn that is more of a sport weight.

A few sport weight sock yarns… if size 3 needles or so are too small then you’ll have to go up to DK weight.

Check out She has the same yarn (though I didn’t look closely enough to see if she has the same colour), for $10/hank BUT she doesn’t charge shipping!! I’ve ordered from her before and have been very happy.

Here is a website for nothing but sock yarn. A good site for comparing sock yarns. I have not ordered from them so I don’t know what their turn around time is. But they have everything you could want for knitting socks IMHO

18 bucks for 2 hanks is a good price for that yarn, but I agree with the others, it’s not what you’re looking for if you want to knit on size 4’s. I happen to like that sock yarn, it is soft and springy and has decent stitch definition, but I wouldn’t knit it on anything bigger than a 1 or 2.

Lorna’s Laces also makes Shepherd Sport which is Sport weight, one of the sites people have linked above probably have it. You might like that one!

Thanks. I’m new to socks and I just don’t know if I want to put THAT much work onto size 1 or 2s with yarn that seems so fragile.
