Is there any standard way to turn a heel?

What if I’m not following any pattern, and need to turn the heel?

Something like:

If you have [B]X[/B] stitches on the heel flap, slip first stitch, knit [B]X[/B] stitches…

I know I have to knit (or purl) until there’s 1 stitch before the gap…

I simply want to know how to start doing it (how many stitches?)

Yes, it’s a book. It has several patterns in it and is one of my favorite books of hers. She’s hilarious. :teehee:

Yes…

(no!)

There several standards.

there are hankerchief heel (turnings) with a v point
there are half round, (not quite round)
there are round heel turnings

there are square (aka Dutch) heel turnings.

there are heel short row heel, and after thought heels, there are German heel, and Welsh heels and Cuban heels…
There are Pointy Turkish heels…there are strong heels, and gurnsey heels… there novelty turnings… there are reverse heels, and inverted heels… and some other styles i’ve forgotten!

There are STANDARDS (but not one standard!)

Pick ONE (any one!) try it.

next sock, pick another

at some point, you might find a heel you really like… and stick with it for a while… but there are endless ways to turn a heel…

Still once you learn a few, you’ll quickly see, many have things in common… and the differences are sometimes subtle…
(and some times radical!)

For a basic sock ill use the short row heel and do the math like so;
Take half of the total stitches and divide by three if it doesn’t divide exactly just round the digit somewhere so that you get and even number. That’s how many stitches ill wrap on each side of the heel. for example if my sock is 60sts around the heel is going to be 30sts I take that and divide by 3 and I get 10 so my heel will have 10 wrapped sts on each side of the heel before ill start picking them up again and continuing on with my sock. I also do the exact same for my toe only start on the bottom of the foot and short row up around the toes and graft on top kind of like production socks.
This is my basic method if the math comes out with an odd number then I put that extra stitch in the middle for example 31sts would be 10sts on each side and 11 in the middle that’s just what I do
