So I have a design in my head that I’m trying to figure out how to make appear on the needles. It’s for a bag/purse. Basically I want to knit a flat bottom, starting with a provisional cast-on, then pick up stitches on the sides of the bottom piece and knit the sides of the bag in the round. The problem comes in on the finishing… is there a way to pick up the stitches again where the bottom meets the side so that I can put pockets in it? What I’m thinking would basically have 1 row of stitches with 3 lengths coming out of it, kind of like this: |/
Is that possible? Can I run a “life line” through that row of stitches to easily pick them up again (with a smaller sized needle) at the end?
Yes, you could likely do the lifeline thing. Another way would be to grab a crochet hook and pull up loops through the flat bottom of your bag. This would also work for your side pockets. Then just thread all the loops-in-a-line onto your knitting needle and off you go. Yes, you would have to sew up the sides; I don’t think there is a way to knit the side-connections.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about with your 3 yarn strands. But the above technique is what I’ve used on a number of bags.

PS - it is also a great idea to knit a long ribbon-like strip, attach it to the inside near the top. Then put one of those little triangle clip-thingys on the free end. Presto! A way to hold your keys so you can find them quickly!
