Is there a "Figure 8 cast on" tutorial for contine

I have thesedirections for a figure 8 cast on to make the “Top Down Bonnet” at helloyarn.com. I think I’ve got it, albeit my stitches were way too tight for my first try. The directions appear to be for English knitters as well, but seemed easy to switch around for Continental… I think… of course I might be totally messing up it though.

Any of the continental knitters know of another tutorial? Does this figure 8 cast have another name for continental?

Thanks!

this site has some alternatives to the figure 8, and also some tips from other people who have had problems.

Thanks for the info Hilde. I did eventually get it after about 8 tries. The stitches between the two needles half way through the first K around is a little loose, but I think I can even it out when the hat is done (plus ears go about right there anyway :teehee: . I wasn’t crazy about the way all that winding was untwisting the yarn threads, but it’s really not noticeable after the first round. It’s kinda neat the way the piece is knitted solid (no holes, pieces) to start!

I have never seen figure 8 cast on before. I don’t understand when you would use it. Does it have a firm or stretchy edge? :??

You use it for the toes of socks, or for making bags. It’s seamless.

Oh, thank you I will keep that in mind.

I tried the method in this pattern http://www.elann.com/ShowFreePattern.asp?Id=4024 basically you use a cable cast on, distribute the stitches on two needles alternatively and then slip some stitches on a third needle. You then start increasing. I must say it wasn’t all that easy. How would you call that method? It’s different than the figure 8 cast on, but it’s not a short row toe either…

Sort of like double knitting maybe? The double knit where you CO an even number of stitches, then alternately k1, sl across on all rows.
