Irish Hiking Wrist Warmers and cable issues

I’m knitting Irish Hiking Wrist Warmers from Ravelry!

Anyway, I’m doing fine, at least it looks good, but I’m having trouble with the cables. Basically I know how to do it and am doing it correctly but it’s so HARD to get the needle in the stitches that have my little cable needle in them. I can do the first one ok, the second one is much more difficult and on the third one I usually end up dropping stuff trying to make the knit stitch. What am I doing wrong? Is it just my tension? I’m a tight knitter but everywhere else the glove seems fine. How can I fix this one issue without using bigger needles? I already have one glove halfway done!

Thanks everyone!

I looked at the pattern and you are doing basic cables. I wonder if where you said,

it’s so HARD to get the needle in the stitches that have my little cable needle in them
that the key word could be “little”. Are you using a cable needle that is quite a lot smaller in diameter than the needles you are using to knit with? If you are this could be making it hard for you. Try to find a cable needle that is about the same size around as your knitting needles. It shouldn’t really be any different than knitting off of any needle. Or maybe your cable needle is too short for you to operate it easily. Maybe you can use a longer cable needle. You can use a straight needle if you don’t have a cable needle the right size. One that offers some resistance to slipping would be a good choice, like a bamboo double point, if you can’t find a cable needle of the kind you are using that is a better size.

I hope this helps.

Thanks so Much! I hadn’t thought of that. I’m using a very small, bent needle that came in my kit and was described as a cable needle. It would work great if it were the size of my regular needles! lol You are wonderful. I’ll just go grab a needle closer to the size and try that.

Thanks!

thank you so much again MerigoldinWA. I got out a bigger crochet hook to use and things went so well! I have FINISHED the first arm warmer! My mom saw it today and didn’t know that she began coveting her own birthday present! LOL Can’t wait to see her face.

Thanks so much!

I’m glad I was able to help. I made several pair of fingerless mitts this last winter and enjoyed making them a lot. Your mom will love hers, especially since you made them.
