Irish Hiking Scarf question

I want to knit an Irish Hiking Scarf with 10-15 rows of ribbing at both ends. BUT my pattern doesn’t have the ribbing part included.

This is the scarf I’ve started:

Some of the pics do have ribbing and some don’t. Anybody got any ideas on how I can do this???

Sure. Just cast on the correct number of stitches for the pattern (42) and knit however many rows of 1,1 or 2,2 or whatever ribbing pattern you’d like (1,1 is K1, P1; 2,2 is K2, P2), as long as it’s an even number.

Write down the number of rows, or the number of inches/cm, the ribbing takes up (probably on the pattern?) and, when the scarf is as long as you’d like it to be, knit the same amount of ribbing again.

Cast off.

Voilá! a scarf!

Excellent suggestion. I’d add that if your ribbing count doesn’t match exactly to the scarf pattern count, just decrease or increase however many stitches to make it work after the ribbing.

I’ve seen pictures of these scarves with ribbing at the ends and I’ve always wondered exactly HOW it matched up. Since the ribbing is K2 P2 and the cables are K6 (K3 and K3).

ie…in this picture, the ribbing is K2 P2. How does that match up with the K6 across the cable??

Good question, I’ll be interested in seeing the answer too! My guess: Skillful use of increases and/or decreases to get things to line up right. Now to wait and find out.

If you do k2p2 ribbing across 50sts (as in the green scarf photo), the cables will align with the ribbing. Do the ribbing and when you’re ready to start the cable pattern, begin with k2p2, C6F etc, the cable cross row. The purl ditch "disappears"in the middle of the C6F cable.
Cast on of 38sts will work too (3 cable columns instead of 4).
