Interpreting Selvedge Stitch Instructions for Osier Pattern by Brooklyn Tweed

Knitting the Osier Cardigan from Brooklyn Tweed and just getting started but wanted some opinions before getting too far!

Right now I’m at the beginning working from the hem of the body up, and I’m just starting the main pattern. At the very beginning of the first two “setup” rows, they tell you to do a modified slip stitch selvedge for two stitches at the beginning and end. However, when you get into rows 6 and 8 (WS) of the pattern, they don’t explicitly say S2SS at the beginning and end (which I find BT usually does every row from the patterns I’ve knitted from them before to a point where I used to roll my eyes how redundant it was). Instead, it just says knit until the last 4 st and k1 p1 twice (which doesn’t fall in line with the regular flat “osier” stitch pattern. Not only that, but where the selvedge stitches seem to be a stockinette, doing a k1p1 x2 at the end would ruin that. So I’m wondering if I should account for the 2 selvedge stitches or not. Would you knit until 6 st so you still have the 2 selvedge stitch at the end or would you ignore it and truly just knit until the last 4 with the given instructions ignoring the S2SS? I think I’m just getting thrown off because it’s not explicitly telling you to do the S2SS at the end, but I don’t want my pattern to get wonky at the edge, even if it will be hidden a bit but not entirely once the ribbing is added.

Hello
As it says, “continue in established pattern” I would take it that the established pattern is always 2 sts of S2SS at beginning and end of the row, this is established in the set up rows and to be continued. The remainder stitches between the selvedge stitches are to be worked in flat osier stitch. When I says in the osier pattern work to last 4 it means last 4 for the osier stitches, not last 4 of the stitches on the needle.
Therefore it will be last 4 of osier stitch, then to maintain pattern as set, the 2 sts for the selvedge.
I’d probably put a marker 2 sts in from each end to remind myself that the stitch pattern starts/stops there and that the selvedge sts are to be worked differently.

I think this is exactly what you were already feeling about the interpretation of the pattern and just needed another pair of eyes to agree.

I hope this helps
