Interpreting pattern - short rows

Hi everybody

I’m trying to knit short rows but I’m having trouble interpreting the pattern. The pattern says to purl alternative rows but it doesn’t say how many stitches to purl. So for example I cast on 28 stitches and purl row 1, knit 20 stitches on row 2 and now I need to purl again, should I purl all the way to the end or just 20 stitches?

If anyone is familiar with the Donna Wilson Odd Bod Bunch book, its the nose of Rita Racoon that I’m struggling with!

Thanks all

After you knit the 20sts, you’re going to turn for the short row so that the row 3 sts will be on a purl row and you only have 20 sts on the left hand needle. Leave the other 8 sts on the right hand needle to be worked later. See if the directions want you to purl all of the 20sts or only some number of them before doing another short row. There’s a good video of short rows on the Free Videos tab at the top of this page under Advanced Techniques if you’d like to watch it done.

You can only purl over the 20 sts you knit on row 2, so purl back on them, unless it says to only purl 12 or something.
