I am trying to knit the Sock Monkey Hat (husband is an adaptive ski instructor for small children) and I cannot find good instructions for knitting Intarsia. This pattern in general seems a bit confusing to me so any and all clarity is appreciated.
Unfortunately my local knitting shops charge $10/hr to answer questions and my nice one (an hour away) closes before I get off work !!
Hopefully my link to the pattern works - it is off the Knitty site and their intarsia instructions were not very helpful (IMHO)
It looks like the intarsia that is on the hat is mainly the mouth, right? You’d knit with the brown up to the mouth, knit with white, and then, with another strand, knit with the brown again. The site above has good directions on changing colors without getting a hole. Basically if you hold the color you’re no longer using over to the left and then start with the color your switching to, the yarns will twist automatically. Have you looked at Amy’s video on intarsia in the Advanced section?
The brim of the hat is worked back and forth, since you can’t really do this kind of intarsia in the round. After the color changes are done, then you can switch to circulars.
:happydance: Thank you so much ! I read your link and also looked at Amy’s video in Advanced techniques. I had checked the basic section and didn’t think to check advanced. I guess I was just trying to make it more complicated than it really was - the first thing I read about intarsia was talking about knitting from both ends of a ball of yarn rather than just having long threads.
Thank you so much for your help !! Now if I could just find the main color yarn I would be all set.
OMG That is insane! My LYS is always full of people with questions and the ladies who work there are more than happy to answer any and all questions, regardless of where you bought the yarn. Heck, as a “regular”, I’ve even helped my fair share of “customers”. All the “regulars” do. We even persuade the “customers” to become "regulars. :teehee:
