Intarsia/Picture Knitting and bobbins

Hi -

Okay, so I have designed my first pattern and it is charted. There are two colors. But, at the beginning, there are 5 sections, MC, CC, MC, CC, MC. Now the 2nd and 3rd sections are small, like 3 or 4 stitches max, and then there are longer stretches on the 4th and 5th sections. There is only about 9 rows of this, then it goes to mc, cc, mc. My question is this. Should I have a bobbin for each section, and then drop the bobbins when I am done with the section, or should I just stay with the 3? Thank you.

I’ve found that when I’ve tried to save myself the trouble of using a new strand for a few stitches, that those stitches tend to bunch up a bit and lie less flat than the ones where I used different strands.

I would also suggest that you consider not using bobbins. They tend to get caught up on each other and tangle. They also have a habit of needing to be unwound right in the middle of a run of that color. I’ve found that Kaffe Fassett’s idea of using long strands for each color tends to work better. They do get tangled, but are very easy to pull out one at a time. It is a personal preference, though.

I have taken Ingrid’s advice on a project I am working on now…I have 24 strands of different color yarns working in a project. I just let them hang and it is so easy to keep them untangled.

It’s a pain, but do not strand more than 2-3 stitches.
