Intarsia help

I am working my first intarsia piece and it’s going along surprisingly well, but I don’t think I get how to bring in a new piece of yarn mid-chart at a color change. Normally I would just knit it in, but I fear the yarns aren’t being twisted like they need to be. How does this work?

Thanks!

Hi! I’m working on my first intarsia project too. I found a great way to join a new yarn in the ‘Vogue Knitting’ book. It actually has 3 options for how to join, but this seemed the least complicated and it actually works really well. Here are the instructions exactly:

“Wrap first the old and then the new yarn knitwise and work the first stitch with both yarns. Drop the old yarn. Work the next two stitches with both ends of new yarn. Drop the short end of the new color and continue working with the single strand. On the following row, work the three double stitches as single stitches.”

It sounds a bit odd, especially the part about using BOTH colors together for the first stitch, like you’re going to end up with some multicolored stitch there, but you don’t AND it weaves in the end at the same time.

this is perfect, thank you!!! now the question is, do i frog my last two rows? thanks again!!!

Sounds like you are a perfectionist like me!! I would frog.

frogging done. this is working magically! thank you so much!!!

I just ran across these intarsia tips, too. I like your idea, KQ

:cheering: Isn’t it great when you find an EASY way of doing something that seems so complicated???

What are you working on?

I’m working on the Hipster from Knitty for my best friend’s birthday in 5 days. I started it like a month ago and was like WHOAH. I called her up and I was like, first off, you’re not getting vertical stripes and secondly, you’re probably not getting the star either. Still want it? teehee. I re-watched Amy’s videos though and it’s going remarkably well now. I’m in like the 7th row of the star pattern, though, and I have such spaghetti dangling from my knitting and I’m like this CANNOT be right. I think it is though. I didn’t think you were supposed to carry in intarsia so i have like 9 or 10 strands going now for the CC before the star, the first part of star, cc again, next part of star, cc again, then the 4 vertical stripes… something like that. whatever it is, it’s spaghetti.

What’s your first intarsia project?
