Instruction Help!

I am getting ready to start a new project, and I was reading the directions and what does ir mean when it says multiple of 4 plus 2. Also in the project that I just comepleted it said 2x2 Rib and I know that it k2 p2 across the row, but when you turn your work , ( just so I know I this is right for future refference) I would knitt the purled stitches and purl the knitt stitches. From the picture of the piece I was doing I finally got the pattern right 5 rows from the end but I wanted to make sure that 2x2 ribbing is to knitt on the purl and to purl on the knitt when the work is turned.

Hi Jessica,
Multiple of 4 plus 2 is the size of your pattern repeat, 6 stitches. If you want to make the piece larger or smaller, you add or subtract 6 stitches, 12 stitches, or more, depending on the size you’re aiming for.
You’re correct in your take on the 2x2 rib.
What are you making?

Is this a direction for the number of stitches to cast on?
The stitch pattern you are knitting is based on four stitches.
You’ll cast on a multiple of four stitches (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.)
to get the width you want, then add two extra stitches which will not be part of the pattern but will form a selvage, or edging.

In other words, depending on the width of the piece you want to knit,
you would cast on 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, etc., stitches.

Hi Linda I was making a head band… I will post a pick of my finshed project it is not perfect, but for a learner its not bad. I am moving on to a purse now and I will be learning how to cable.

You work the sts as they present. K sts on the RS will be P sts on the WS. Don’t concern yourself with how they look on the side you’re NOT working…just as they face you. If you do the reverse of how they appear, you’ll get a seed/moss effect.

Ok so … On the side that i am working it will look like purl on one side and knit on the other ( correct) so if the side I am working I see knitt stitches then I knit( because on the other side they look like purl stitches. Gee I hope I got that right( its confusing)

I think you’ve got it sorted out right. You can look at the videos under Tips for the Basic Stitches which includes ribbing to see how it’s done.

Oh and if your pattern is 2x2 rib, but it wants you to use a multiple of 4 + 2 sts, then your first row will be k2, p2, across and end with a k2. So the next row will be p 2, k2 across and end with p2.
