Inserting a wrap on short rows

Another Spiderman question. In my first attempt at Spiderman, the pelvis had a bunch of short rows which left a ton of huge holes. I messed up the first attempt so I scrapped it, and started over. It seems the internets want me to w&t to alleviate those holes from the short rows. Below are 20 rows from the pattern.

First, where do I insert the wrap? Is it on stitch 11 on row 2, for example? Or do I actually wrap a 12th stitch? Second, where do I pick up the wraps according to this pattern? Would I pick up the wrap from row 2 in row 18?

Side note…the pattern writer’s first language is Russian, and some sections are hard to follow. I ignored the part about not knitting the first loop in row 2 because I didn’t know what she was saying. Do you think she means to slip the first stitch of row 3? If so, should I do that in the other knit rows too?

Pelvis (22 stitches):

Row 1: KR;
Row 2: p11 and turn the knitting, don’t knit the first loop and go to
Row 3: k11;
Row 4: p9 and turn;
Row 5: k9;
Row 6: p7 and turn;
Row 7: k7;
Row 8: p5 and turn;
Row 9: k5;
Row 10: p3 and turn;
Row 11: k3;
Row 12: p5 and turn;
Row 13: k5;
Row 14: p7 and turn;
Row 15: k7;
Row 16: p9 and turn;
Row 17: k9;
Row 18: p11 and turn;
Row 19: k11;
Row 20: work p11 and turn. Leave the knitting on an extra needle.

At this point, you knit the second leg/pelvis, then you place the left and right leg/pelvis on one needle and knit across to make the body. I guess I would pick up the wrapped stitch from row 20, correct?

It looks as though the designer wants you to slip the first stitch after the turn. Slipping the first stitch in each of the turn rows will close any hole but the slipped stitch tends to be a bit bigger than the rest of the knitting. See 6.00min in this video.

That seems to be the simplest way to work this part of the pattern.

There are several techniques to avoid the holes but if you don’t want the slipped stitch and want to do wrap & turn that’ll work to close the holes. For wrap & turn, knit or purl the given number of sts then wrap the next stitch. You’ll have to account for the slipped stitch on the following rows however since this slipped stitch is part of the pattern.

You’ll be picking up wraps starting on row 12. Every time you knit past a previous wrap, pick up the wrap.

What is the name of your pattern and the designer?

Thank you, this is really helpful. I think I’ll knit a couple swatches of this section and practice.

It’s Spider Man by Olga Chepizhnaya.

Thank you for the link. Yes, practicing on a swatch is a good way to work out the technique. Let us know how it goes and come back if it’s still not right.

Update…I am practicing w&t and ran into a problem.

When I get to row 12 (purl 5), I picked up the wrap from row 10 (stitch 4) then purled stitch 5. So far so good. Then I went to wrap stitch 6…and there’s already a wrap there from row 8. I looked ahead and realized this happens every purl row going forward in this section.

So I decided to try and wrap it a second time to see what would happen. On row 14 (purl 7), I picked up the 2 wraps on stitch 6, but it did not look good.

Do I try this technique again? Is there a way to pick up 2 wraps and it looks good? Or do I just slip the stitch as the designer intended?

I’m exasperated. I just practiced w&t a bunch of times from the purl side and I still seem to get holes. I also tried to slip the first knit stitch after the turn instead and I get holes. I tried to pick up multiple wraps on one stitch and it was too tight to purl into.

Is there anything I can do to get a similar result? Here is a pic of the two legs/pelvises. IMG_3231

I edited this post to delete almost all of it. Nothing like trying these rows on the needles.
Don’t bother about counting the slipped loop. That won’t work with the stitch number. Try knitting one past the w&t from the earlier row, then w&t. On the next knit row, knit one more stitch than the row says to knit.
You’ve persisted so far in working these fiddley little pieces. You will get this to work too.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! Ok so for row 12 (instructions say purl 5) I’ll do this:

Actually purl 6, picking up the wrap from row 10 (stitch 4), picking up the wrap from row 8 (stitch 6), then wrapping stitch 7.

Any tips on the wraps? I still have holes after I pick up the wraps. :roll_eyes:

I like this method for picking up wraps.
