Ingrid- Ragna pattern Yipee!

Hello,
Actually anyone can help with this pattern. But I know Ingrid has the book! The pattern is Ragna. It comes from Viking Patterns For Knitting.

I am needing help reading the chart. Now to figure out how to say what my trouble is :slight_smile: I really just want to know If I am reading the pattern correctly against the symbol key.

Ill go by chart line.

On line 3 (yeah I am that far along!) a line that crosses 2 plain squares and 2 dot squares slanting UP to the left is: cross 2 knit stitches over 2 purl stitches, to left.
Is this correct?

Just taking a part of line 3 - begins purl row.
p2, k4, p2, slip 2 stitches on to cable needle hold in back, purl the next 2 stitches, knit the two stitches from the cable needle?

I think I have the rythm figured out but its all a bit wobbly in my logic center.

Your help or those of another kind soul is greatly appreciated!

Ok, let’s see.

Chart 14 = sl 2 hold in back, k2, p2 from cable needle, then

Chart 15 = sl2 hold in front, p2, k2 from cable needle.

So yes, your interpretation was right. I had to try it. I can never visualize cable crossings in my head.

Well I must say cables are not easy for the lefty newbie.

If I follow the instructions for cabeling right, I get left, etc.

But if I follow these directions as given for righties, it really wont make any difference in the long run will it? It will appear the same but crossed in the opposite direction?

Or do I need to flop the instructions (cabeling left when specified right) for it to come out ok?

I have been trying to swatch it out - but I just cant see how the repeat builds. I cant tell you how many times I have started over. But hopefully each time I am getting a bit better.

Right now I am just swatching a single repeat with scrap to see how it works out. So no worries that I am abusing my sweater lol

I can’t even imagine how to knit lefty!

As long as the cables branch outward from the center and have the purl stitches in the middle, any way you do it will work. As you get more used to the charts, you’ll be able to tell which way the cable will need to be crossed just by looking at the direction of the line and the placement of the purls.

You certainly believe in jumping in with both feet, don’t you!! I’m impressed!

I learned a long time ago that I am happiest challenging myself just under my frustration limit. Too little challenge and I get bored - too much, well I just give up! Right now I am pretty happy working on this pattern. Its not easy. But this is no quickie pattern either. If I will spend 3 months knitting the sweater, I should be willing to spend a good week or two getting the pattern right eh?

Thanks for all your help with getting me going on intertwined cables.

Your suggestions paid off! I managed to finish one whole repeat and it looks like its supposed to. :slight_smile:

Well I can not tell a lie for long, it looks like its supposed to if it did not have a few errors :rofling:

Still I am quite happy and feel like I can tackle that sweater now. :XX:

Ok here it is.

Now there ARE flaws. And my knitting tension needs work. But at least everything weaves the way it should :slight_smile:
