Ingrid - whatever you need to do to get through the day =- do it!! I’m sad that now that I don’t have a job - you’re going back to work!
Yeah, I’ve talked about the Poughkeepsie ‘toughs’ before, but it IS the drug capital around here. There are a few blocks that I wouldn’t walk down. Just being from Pok. doesn’t make you hard-core, though, as some of my students will have you believe.
There are some gangs, though, and not all in the city. There are some small towns around that have some bad groups. There have been students who got into a scuffle at school, and ended up going after each other with knives and razors outside of school. They are in the distinct minority, but they’re the FFA–Future Felons of America.
The kids that we deal with the most have emotional problems, ADHD, come from dire family situations, etc. Some are quite bright, but their behaviors get in the way of learning.
Sandy–my daughter says the same thing. One wise crack from a kid, and she’d respond in kind. Then it would be :waving:
The problem I have is that when they’re all behaving and doing their work, I get bored and antsy. If they want genuine help and not just ask me to give them answers, that’s good, too. It seems to run hot or cold, though. I prefer to keep busy, which is easy to do the first few weeks.
I’ll deal. It could be worse, by far.

My first year teaching, a kid told me to suck his big black you-know-what … I told him to kiss my ass! That was REALLY professional of me. :rollseyes: The principal gave me a REAL good talking to, and I almost peed my pants. :oops: But I learned to control my responses immediately following THAT conversation. Now I just :!!!: in my haid.
That is the toughest part of being a teacher, no? Not swearing at the little bstrds!

Re: clean slates - it is the only way to get through life. You curse them out on your off time and great them the next day with a smile. Okay, maybe strained smile.
Anyway, Ingrid, my hubby and I feel your pain as we head back to the salt mines this week too…
