Indicating a stitch

When measuring the gauge, for example if it’s 16 stitches = 4 inches, where do you count 1 stitch? Are they the cast-on loops?

When you’re measuring for gauge, you should knit a swatch that’s more than 4 inches so you can measure actual stitches and rows–not edges.

Don’t knit 16 stitches and see if it adds up to 4 inches. Knit 5 inches and see how many stitches you have across 4 inches of it.

Ok so when I make the swatch, how do I count the stitches? (for garter stitch) I mean…how do you know that this is counted as the first stitch, second stitch, third stitch etc. Sorry, it’s probably because I’m not that good at English.

Just put your ruler across a line of stitches, making sure that it’s straight and that you’re counting the same row all the way across.

Line up a stitch with the first mark on your ruler, and count how many stitches you have between there and 4 inches. There can be stitches on either side of the 4 inches–just count those between the 0 and the 4.

Here is an article on gauge if you think it will help.

Thanks Ingrid, I read that article already before posting this topic but it still didn’t answer my question. From this picture that I posted, is the one in red or blue right (for counting the stitches)?

Oh! Count the blue.
