Increasing

Hi! Beginner here. Love the videos but the one on increasing is short and I am not sure if it applies to my pattern. I am trying to make mittens and the pattern wants me to increase 4 sts evenly. I know I have to increase every eight for 32 stitches but it doesn’t specify M1, bar increase, etc. I don’t know how to make an increase. I have the book knitting for dummies and it shows increasing differently from the video here. Can someone direct me to the correct video? Thanks.

The correct video is a tricky request as there is no one correct video. The videos here were really helpful to me when I first started but I just found How to: Knit Increases which shows several ways of increasing in one video making them easier to compare. I wanted and couldn’t find this when I started! Which increase you use is up to you, you just don’t want to leave holes. Pick the one you are most comfortable with and use that one, just be consistent.

There are other methods of increasing but you don’t really need to be concerned about them just yet.

ETA: Knowing when to increase is terrific! A lot of new knitters really get stuck on where to place the increases evenly.

Thanks so much for the advice and the link Grumpy Gramma. It was very helpful!

I’m glad I could help. If you wish to post a picture of your mittens, while you’re working on them and/or after you’re done, please do! What’cha Knittin’ is a good place for photos.
