Hello All - I am trying to decipher a cable sweater pattern (for my husband) and the pattern asks for increases in work chart - the chart is worked over 26 sts. so here it is: Beg main patt as follows, working row 1 of chart: Work 8 sts in St st; work chart inc 2 sts evenly (ok this is the problem - do the increases happen in the 26 sts or before and after); patt continues *work 16 sts in St st; work chart inc 3 sts evenly (the problem again); rep from * Oh - I begin with 118 sts and should end up with 126. Shouldn’t I always work with the same 26 sts of the work chart?? I hope this makes sense. Any help would be appreciated. This is a terrific site!!!
Can you post a link to the pattern or an image of the chart?

Beg main patt as follows, working row 1 of chart:
Work 8 sts in St st;
work chart inc 2 sts evenly
(ok this is the problem - do the increases happen in the 26 sts or before and after);
patt continues *
work 16 sts in St st;
work chart inc 3 sts evenly
(the problem again);

OK you start with 118… (and need to end with 126)
First lets break direction down to 1 set of instructions per line:
Work 8, work chart 2(26 +2 increase) *work 16, work chart (26+3) (repeat from *) work 16, work chart (26+3)
so lets do the math:
8+26=34 (8 stocking knit +26 from chart)
26 +2=28 (plus 2 increase)
28+16=44 (*then 16 stitches in stocking knit)
44+26=70 (then, chart of 26 again)
70+3=73 (plus 3 increases)
73+16=89 (*repeat from --16 stitches of stocking knit)
89+26=115 (repeat, 26 stitches from chart
115 +3=118 (with 3 more increases)
Edit
118 +8 =126 (the last 8 are for symmetry (since you started with 8–theses last 8 should be in stocking knit. )
(and as you see, 118, (start count) and end 126, (8 increases)
OK so the count is right.–(i had to do the math twice and then double check it to make sure i got it right!)
As for the increases?
i would work them at the beginning and the end of the chart for the first group of 26.
for the next 2 repeats of the chart, i would work beginning and end, and third in middle.
