Hi there, I’m Fliss and relatively new to knitting … I have a pattern for a little cardigan for a 3 month old and not sure what the single decreases means … ‘with Rt side facing, work to m, sm,ssk, work to last 2 sts before m, k2tog, sm work to end of row’
These instructions are after and inch of rib and then 6 rows of stocking stitch … what does ‘m’ mean … many thanks for any advice!
Increasing
Hello! M means marker. It can be loops of plastic, or just a loop of yarn you make yourself. It helps to make sure that your decreases follow the same line without the pattern having to specify a different number of stitches to work in each row, as the decreases or increases are formed.
Your pattern should have specified where to place the markers in an earlier row, probably after the ribbing and any increases that might have been needed in the first row of stockinette. Place marker would be abbreviated to pm.
So your instructions are, work to marker, slip marker, work ssk, work to two stitches before the next marker, k2tog, slip marker, work to end of row
This will keep your decreases stacked symmetrically on the inside of the markers.
Ok, brilliant! Thanks so much I think I understand it now … I’ll have a go
Yep! It’s working! Thanks again Mel61
I’m actually decreasing not increasing … brain fog
Well done!
