Increasing when joining 2 legs and staying in pattern

Hi

It’s the first time I have knit anything since my son was born 30 years ago and I have got a pattern to knit an all in one baby suit. The pattern is King Cole 3504 Aran. I have knit both legs following the pattern and have even managed the cable!! But I have been instructed to join the legs together by increasing 1 stitch and the end of the first leg then adding then second leg from the other needle the instruction then tells to to continue in pattern for another 15 rows but I know that the pattern will be incorrect and will run off. The cable runs down the side but the patterning in the middle will surely run off as I have no idea what to do with the extra stitch. Can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Ally

Hi and welcome!
If there’s no way to incorporate the extra stitch into the pattern, don’t do the increase. Since it’s only a single stitch, it probably won’t make a difference. Make sure that this stitch isn’t compensating for a decrease toward the top of the leg. It may also help to read ahead to make sure that there’s not something else intended for the extra stitch.
Adorable pattern. http://www.deramores.com/all-in-one-in-king-cole-aran-3504

That’s really great advice. I didn’t think just to leave it out. I did read ahead but couldn’t see a decrease further on so I guess I’ll just omit it.

Thanks again for the great advice

Well, usually there’s a reason for these changes in stitch number but I can see how it would throw off the pattern. If there doesn’t seem to be any reason for it further on in the pattern, just continue without.
Love to see a photo when you finish if you’d like to post one.

Well I haven’t knit anything in 30years and even then my knitting is extremely armature but once it’s finished I will try to figure out how to post a picture. It’s weekend knitting only I’m afraid as I work full time but I have to say so far I am really enjoying it.

Good! If it’s not enjoyable, why bother? I’m sure the outfit will be loved and worn often. For whom are you knitting?

Hi there,

Just did the legs to this pattern, casting on the 1 added stitch in the middle. I kept the +1 stitch and just following the knit/purl seed pattern because after the 15 rows of pattern, you have to start decreasing on each end.
If I were to start knitting this pattern again, I would not cast on this extra stitch. Even with the decreasing later on, it’s only 1 stitch.

Must be a pattern glitch…tried looking up problems with this pattern and just found your inquiry here. I will make a note in my pattern not to add this cast on stitch for knitting this again in the future. It really throws you off, doesn’t it ?

Good to have the confirmation. Thanks, Vanessa and welcome to Knitting Help!

I finished this too but couldn’t work out how to post a picture. I was kind of pleased with how this turned out but hope my future projects have a much better finish to them. Again thanks to all or support and advice.

 That is really sweet. It turned out really good!

Wow, I love it! The set is beautifully knit and looks perfect. Well done.

Hi there, your picture of the finished outfit looks great !
I knitted 2 of these for my 2 grandsons, one not adding the
extra stitch and one of them adding it.
Both turned out just fine (too).

I did write King Cole and inquired about the
extra stitch, they replied saying that you need the extra
stitch to give you an odd no. of sts to follow the moss stitch pattern.
Thinking about this made sense, since both legs only have
21 sts each giving you a total of only 42 sts and this is
an even number. Besides, after adding this extra stitch,
you actually end up decreasing it later on.

Either way you do this pattern, it seems to work out,
so happy knitting !
