What is the difference in a yarn over and a YIF, K1?
Yarn Over 101 Skip up to 10:20 in the video. That might be what you’re supposed to do.

YIF, yarn in front, followed by a knit stitch is a yarn over. There are some patterns where yarn in front or wyif (with yarn in front) followed by a slip stitch and wyib (with yarn in back) is meant to give a bar across the front of the knitting.
Does your pattern give a specific definition?
